People from the EU Accession countries (except for Malta and Cyprus) can work under the provisions of the Worker Registration Scheme. However, difficulties can arise when the person's passport, which a potential employer may want to see, is held by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND). This is likely to be the case where the person concerned was in the United Kingdom before 1 May 2004, claiming asylum.
The IND has now announced that the National Asylum Support Service EU Accession Helpline can deal with queries about this and will try to find the passports of people in this position. The helpline number is 020 8604 6775.
