The government has announced that in England, from 6 April, the childcare element of working tax credit will cover childcare provided in a family's own home. This is an extension of the existing scheme which applies to registered childminders only.
The person providing the childcare will need to meet certain requirements, for example, have a relevant qualification or have attended an approved induction course in childcare.
In the UK as a whole, the childcare element of working tax credit will increase to £175 a week for one child and to £300 a week for two or more children. However, you can still only claim 70% of childcare costs. This will increase in future years.
Finally, from April, the first £50 a week of employer-provided childcare vouchers will be tax and national insurance free if the childcare provider is registered or approved.
