High hedges - neighbour's right to complain

11 January 2005

People whose domestic property is affected by a neighbour's high hedge in Wales now have the right to complain to the local authority. This may result in the neighbour being required to reduce the height of the hedge. Not all hedges are covered. A person must have tried to resolve the complaint before going to the local authority. The local authority can charge the complainant up to £320 before considering a complaint. The person making the complaint or the owner of the hedge can appeal against the local authority's decision.

There will shortly be similar rights in England.
