Gender Recognition Act 2004

15 February 2005

The Gender Recognition Act 2004 deals with the rights of transsexual people. Under the Act, a Gender Recognition Panel (GRP) will issue gender recognition certificates to successful applicants. The certificate will allow people with legal recognition to live in their acquired gender. They will be able, for example, to apply for new birth certificates and get married in their acquired gender.

The GRP is now accepting applications from people who meet certain criteria. However, no gender recognition certificates will be issued until 4 April, when the Act comes into force. We shall send you a new item on gender recognition certificates in April.

Information about applying to the GRP is available from www.grp.gov.uk. More information about the Act can be found on the Department for Constitutional Affairs website at www.dca.gov.uk/constitution/transsex.
